Located in what was once the main road between Kowloon and Sai Kung market, Che Kung Temple is the older of the two temples honouring the famed military commander whose achievements made him first a household name and later a deity. Its well-preserved traditional architecture and rare old growth forest make this temple a beautiful example of Hong Kong’s long cultural legacy, as well as an auspicious local destination.
WEBSITEapprox. 1-min walk from Wong Tai Sin MTR Station
To call the Wong Tai Sin Temple an important shrine would be an understatement: the cultivated gardens and ornate buildings of this popular temple complex serve three of China's major religions (Taoism, Buddhism and Confucianism). The temple, rumored to grant just about any wish, houses a famous portrait of the Taoist God. Every year on the Chinese New Year’s eve, thousands of worshippers will gather around the main altar (where the portrait is kept) to pray to the God through offerings for good luck in the coming year. As you walk into the temple, you will immediately be attracted to the signature red pillars, golden rood and yellow latticework and memorial arches in traditional temples. If you wish to get a feel of how it is like to be like one of the worshippers, you may want to fetch yourself a good Chinese Fortune Stick or a paper windmill. Who knows? For all we know, you may then be blessed for the year to come!
